People used to remember their loved ones by telling stories of who they were and why they were loved. People used to get married in a public declaration of how they were unique to each other. Now pop pap has colonized enough mental territory that it can be belived more worthy to dissolve your identity by embedding yourself in the trappings of failing fast-food TV shows. By the time ONE BLOODY YEAR and CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES are over with, 150-some pages from now, I'll probably be sick of how I draw. I've had as many people complain to me that they're bored with realism as I 've had telling me they'd hope for more realism in comics these days. (In both cases, I take their calling how I draw 'realism' as a huge compliment.) Looking at other people's work for stuff to crib when I relearn how to draw in a few years, I'm seduced of course by the stuff I understand the least, the instincts I don't have. I was shown a book of Eric Canete's sketches recently, in which he writes he's only influenced by AEON FLUX creator Peter Chung. The end result looks like Egon Schiele nudes raided Masamune Shirow for a wardrobe. And I love it. And I don't know how to be that bloody savage with a pencil. Also staring at Alessandro Barbucci and Barbara Canepa's SKY DOLL a lot. And Claire Wendling's portfolio books. Sexy cartoons. Funny animals with energy ramped up to the max. ONE BLOODY YEAR is solid drama and I'm loving it, but I have to learn how to do lowbrow action-adventure next. Just to destroy any sort of brand identity my style might have earned me by then. Because I haven't performed enough acts of faulty marketing yet. -- Michel Lacombe Site: http://michel-lacombe.dyndns.org Mailing list: http://babyl.dyndns.org/mailman/listinfo/one_bloody_list From one_bloody_list at babyl.dyndns.org Tue Mar 23 19:38:10 2004 From: one_bloody_list at babyl.dyndns.org (one_bloody_list at babyl.dyndns.org) Date: Tue, 23 Mar 2004 19:38:10 -0500 Subject: [One Bloody List] More pencil envy Message-ID: <4060D872.8070403@babyl.dyndns.org> Other people I wish I could come near stylistically: Didier Cromwell of LE BAL DE LA SUEUR. I've read a thing or two I found offensive in people's Journals tonight, to which I have not responded for a number of reasons. First, I try to be polite to the other people at a party, especially one I'm the latest guest to join. Second, opinions are tribal callsigns much more often than they are an invitation to exchange differing views. Third, you learn more about any species if you observe it unobtrusively. But most importantly, my impulse to argue these days is greatly driven by my general discomfort at the political and cultural climate I'm living in. Between blatantly illegal wars, corrupt high-level politicians and reality TV, it's like mediocrity in all its forms is trying to see how much it can get away with. And getting away with bloody murder only makes it want to try taking it a little further next time out. So I really should just leave anti-abortionists and David Lynch bashers alone just now. The first inkling I had that her job at the liquor store might be dangerous was when an attempted hold-up ended in a way too hilarious for her not to recount at the dinner table. I only heard the grislier hold-up stories when I was much older. The cashier at another branch who had been shot, condemned to a wheelchair for life. His co-worker who had bolted at the sound of the shot reached the basement storeroom so fast he would later try the run again to see if he could beat his time. The recently robbed employee, asked by the company therapist whether she saw the man who'd robbed her in her dreams. "Yeah, always with a bullet in his head." My mom's story. Guy walks up to her cash, points a gun at her and orders her to give him the money. She looks at the gun and says "That thing's fake." Stunned robber assures her that it isn't. "What am I, an idiot? That's a toy. Get out of here." Mouth hanging, robber pockets his gun and leaves. Police show up, take my mom's complaint, look at the security footage... "Uh, ma'am? That's a real gun."
