Fading Suns is a role-playing game created by Holistic Design Inc. The setting of this game could be described as a kind of gothic space opera. Think Frank Herbert's Dune, with a little bit of Star War thrown in and a sprinkle of Dungeon and Dragons mixed to the blend. The result is a most versatile setting. You want a dark medieval setting with nobility, feudal-flavored politic, bloody feuds and Herbertish wheels within wheels within wheels plots? You got it. You want swash-buckling adventures, flashy space ships and buddies called Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers? You got them. You want Tolkienish quests with lot of loin-clothed barbarians and clawed creatures whose knowledge of dental hygiene has been lost in the dawn of time? Got them too.
So, all in all, Fading Suns can be seen as the swiss army knife of role-playing games. It's nifty.
Prodigal Sun is meant to be the chronicle of Ezekiel Moerae, published as a serial of short stories, and takes place in the universe of the Fading Suns. Officially, the project has been born out of a desire to join a short stories contest organized by the very fine folks at the Fading Suns Wordsmiths Guild. Officiously, I do it 'cause it sounds like fun, and I'm curious to see how rusty the old writing skills are.
The contest is supposed to end in May 2001. At the moment, the first installment of Prodigal Sun is planned to be out February 14th (hey, someone did say that writing is an act of love). I plan to have the second installment out before May. Of course, you should interpret the term plan here as meaning if I don't procrastinate, forget about it, change my mind, get hit by a truck or prove to the world what a lazy bum I am. Just like a mattress whose tag has been ripped off, I come with no guarantee.
And that's all you need to know for now.
Ah. The wonders of what a sick mind, too much time and a nifty animation package can do...
